What is Laparoscopy ?

Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgery. (small incision) in which small cuts of 0.5 to 1.5 cm are made in the abdomen or pelvis (uterine area) to insert a thin camera (laparoscopy). This procedure has several advantages:

1 The pain decreases.

2 Bleeding decreases.

3 Recovery happens quickly.

When is laparoscopy necessary ?

1 Diagnostic (for search)

(a) When scans and blood test do not provide sufficient information.

(b) For examination of problems related to the stomach, uterus, ovaries, or bladder.

2 Treatment (for therapy)

(a) Endometriosis

(b) Removing ovaries or fibroids or cysts

(c) Hysterectomy

(c)The problem of infertility, etc.

Preparation before surgery

1. Pre- operative check-up :

Medical history, blood test, ECG, etc.

2. Medication advice :

Blood-thinning medications may need to be stopped.

3. Preparation for anesthesia :

Do not eat or drink at night

4. Household arrangements :

Early return home may be possible, so bring along transportation and care.

What happens during surgery ?

1. General anesthesia is given.

2. By putting CO₂ gas in the stomach, the inside view is clearly visible.

3. Your problem is examined and treated through laparoscopy and small tools, if possible.

4. Gas is released, the cuts are sealed, and you are sent to recovery.

What will be felt after the operation ?

1. In the first few days there may be pain, fatigue, sensitivity, muscle tension, or discomfort in the shoulders or ribs (cause: gas).

2. Painkillers help.

3. There may be some time when you feel pressure or stress.

Serious but rare

1 General risk

1. Related to anesthesia.

2. Infection in wounds.

3. Bleeding.

4. Gas backup (the surgeon removes this before discharge).

2 Serious but rare

1. Injury to the intestine, bladder or blood vessels.

2. DVT (Deep vein thrombosis).

3. Gas-filled stomach, pain in the chest.

Care after surgery

1. Pain:

(a) Take painkillers regularly.

(b) Take laxatives to avoid constipation.

2. Wound care:

(a) Keep the wound clean and dry; some stitches dissolve on their own in 5-7 day, while others require removal.

3.Prevention of infection:

(a) Complete the antibiotics; refrain from heavy medications (acid); avoid pools/spas.

4 Gradual activities:

(a) Avoid heavy work in the first 48 hours and refrain from driving for 1 week.

5 Return to work:

(a) Operation only to be observed: - 1 week

(b) Operative (such as removing cysts): - 2-3 weeks.

6 Sex and exercise:

(a )Sex can be avoided for 2-6 weeks; heavy exercise should also be avoided for the same duration.

Call the doctor immediately

1. Fever (>38 °C), severe abdominal pain

2. Burning in the urine or difficulty in urination

3. Fast care from the wound/ yellow discharge

4. Pain in the legs or discomfort in the chest (signs of DVT).
